Magdalena Island and the Magellanic Penguins colony

While we’re on the boat

We will transfer for a check-in and then to Laredo, where the boat trip will take about 30 minutes. We will take the speedboat to Magdalena Island where the largest colony of penguins in Chilean Patagonia is located. It will take us an hour to get to the boat and then we will be ready to disembark and walk among these 120,000 pairs of Magellanic Penguins.

For those who are interested in walking the entire way as a trail to the lighthouse, it will take us about 30 minutes, even though we have an hour to be on the island. Trust us….you won’t want to see another penguin after this. For those who are not interested in walking too much, you will only need to get off the boat and you will be surrounded by these beautiful birds, some of them will be swimming right in front of you, others will return to their burrows where the nests are and others will simply come out to stretch for a while.

Once back on the boat, it will take us 30 minutes to get to the second island called Marta where we will find a colony of sea lions. Since we are not trying to disturb them, we will stop right in front of them to enjoy their company with their cubs if necessary. It’s season.
